Never to ride again!

I'm a writer of children's books and stories about animals I live in a barn  with my husband,  horses, dogs and a cat! I love to write it's what I do, I Used to ride and show horses and trained a few in the process and loved every minute.of it.

Did you ever think that your horse career would be over? I Did Not, when I lost my Friesian Nico a few years ago and a few weeks ago lost Glory my little Morgan mare, I said stick a fork in me I'm done. I haven't ridden in a long time and to be honest I don't miss it, my passion has been taken by time and circumstance I'm a 68 year old woman with heart problems, yes I'm much better but you never go back to who you were. I can't breath will enough to ride English which I truly love, my saddle-seat days have been gone for a long time. I wanted to do dressage on Nico because I could sit his trot then lost him I will never get over the loss of Nico I loved him so deeply. Now the loss of Glory I know she was old and she had an ulcer that causes her to colic but it still is so sad! All I have now is Mark my Paint gelding, who I have had from a 3 yrs old who now is 20 and lame, because he cut his foot into the Synovial sack when he was 3 and all the fluid leaked out, so he is permanently lame but he's a great horse, he's like a Labrador and very funny everyone who meets him loves him. He started to go to the wild side because what do you do with a lame horse? You can't work them, Then there was the day he injured me pretty badly, it could have been my undoing so one-day I decided to let Mark be a free spirit I let him wonder the ranch and make decisions for himself and his whole mind set changed really fast, it's unbelievable how he's a totally different horse he's my buddy. I told him the other day he was the last man standing, I swear he knew what I said. It took him a long time to get over Nico, now he's getting over Glory I got her for him so he wouldn't be sad, this time its a goat I think lol !  I do have some other horses here boarding so he is not alone now, which has-made it easier for him. I Still love caring for horses can't stop that, I've done it for 60 years I wouldn't know what to do with myself. So all of you that are still riding keep it up until you absolutely can't! I'll never forget all of the wonderful horses I have owned Friesians, saddlebreds,Paints,Arabs, Morgan,Minis, loved them all.
P.S. I know someone in her 90's still riding its all in the genetics!
Thanks for reading
Take Care

Terry,
What a beautiful story. Your horse days are not done. You are an author now and we can share in your horse days with your books.
We look forward to the next book
